Why is it cheaper to use my home charger with Gexa at night when I’m on SavEV?

Based on historical electricity demand, we have structured a special electricity pricing plan that includes 100% discounted energy charges for EV charging at night between 11:00 PM and 4:59 AM.

How does my Nighttime EV charging credit work?

Gexa calculates the electricity used for at-home charging by each consumer paired to Gexa365 at an hourly level. Gexa applies the Nighttime EV charging credit on the monthly bill based on these hourly metrics between 11:00 PM and 4:59 AM. Gexa also shows drivers this charging data in the mobile app.

FAQs About EV Charging Plans

Can I use my own charger?

Yes, you are welcome to use your own charger. The plan is specifically designed for drivers with Level 2 Chargers and the plan’s savings estimates are based on Level 2 charging speeds. However, you can also use a Level 1 Charger on the SavEV plans.

What is a Level 2 charger?

Level 2 is the most common type of EV home charging station, which relies on a 208-Volt to 240-Volt circuit. These chargers plug into an outlet often used for a clothes dryer.

What are the three types of EV chargers?

Level 1 electric car chargers for homes consist of a standard 120-volt household outlet. Level 1 charging is available for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, by plugging the equipment into any standard wall outlet. Level 1 is slower than other types of EV charging. Each hour, charging an EV with a Level 1 charger increases range by three to five miles. Level 1 charging is often sufficient for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) but is often too slow for Battery-powered Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

Compared to Level 1 charging, a Level 2 EV charger does a 10x faster job of charging electric vehicles. Based on the charger’s output and the vehicle's maximum charging rate, Level 2 charging can replenish a vehicle's range between 12 and 80 miles per hour.

Level 3 EV charging stations can increase the range of an EV by three to twenty miles per minute. The Level 3 charging method differs from Level 1 and Level 2 charging in that it utilizes direct current (DC) rather than alternating current (AC). In addition, Level 3 chargers operate at a much higher voltage than Level 1 & 2 chargers, which is why you do not see them installed at home. Residential locations seldom have the high-voltage supply needed for Level 3 charging.

DC Fast Chargers are also very expensive. The cost of installing the charger is likely to be higher than the cost of your EV even if you have 400-volt electricity at home.
